You may think that the concept of the electric automobile is something new, but it is not. There is electric automobile history that is dating back to the 1800s at which time automobile manufacturers were trying to perfect the use of the automobile. Today, we look back at automobile history when we take a lesson for the future and try to come up with automobiles that run on energy other than gasoline.
Before the invention of internal combustion engines, electric automobiles were the way to go. Electric automobile history dates back to the early part of the 19th century at which time batteries were used to promote electric vehicles. As a matter of fact, the 1867 World Exhibition featured electric vehicles. An electric car broke the previously set speed barrier of 60 in 1899.
Some of the early car makers in electric automobile history include Edison, Studebaker, Anthony Electric, Baker and Detroit. The highest speed achieved by these early vehicles was about 20 mph. When studying electric automobile history, you will note that most of the electric cars that were sold during this period, which was the 1920s, were used for city driving. Longer distance driving at this time relied on gasoline. Still, the power of electricity was continually harnessed throughout electric automobile history.
It was not until 1908 when it was discovered that gasoline powered cars, such as those that used an internal combustion engine, were deemed to be more practical than their electric counterparts. This resulted in cars that were mass produced by Ford, such as the Model T, as well as Cadillac. Both Ford and Cadillac are still around as automakers today, whereas many of the other manufacturers that featured prominently in electric car history are defunct.
Many car makers today are coming up with electric automobiles that are actually hybrids. They generate the same power as gasoline only automobiles but end up using less gas and are safer for the environment. There are also electric automobiles that are made for driving off highway driving. This mimics the city cars that were once used instead of the gasoline counterparts in the 1920s.
Oddly enough, we are now going back to electric automobile history to move forward as the demand for alternate means of energy is needed to fuel our vehicles. The rising cost of oil prices coupled with concern for the environment has made the concept of electric automobiles much more endearing to the public. Because this technology has already been used, auto makers can now look back to electric automobile history as a way to move forward in the future when it comes to car energy.
